The Governor of Ekiti State, Mr Biodun Oyebanji has charged Public Secondary School administrators to be beacons of excellence as custodians of knowledge and builders of future leaders in the State

Speaking at the opening ceremony of a 2-day leadership training programme for Principals and Vice-Principals of Public Secondary Schools in the State which has the theme “Developing High Performance Administrators for Ekiti State Public Secondary Schools”, Oyebanji stated that the success or otherwise of any government is predicated on the effective and efficient utilization of human resources, adding that this is why the present administration recognizes teachers as an irreplaceable entity in strategic human capital development.

Oyebanji who was represented at the training by the Head of Service, Engr. Sunday Komolafe
emphasized that the training of the school administrators was necessary to enrich their abilities in the discharge of their duties.

He enumerated the mechanisms put in place by the government to aid an enabling environment for teachers to include: regular payment of salaries, access to car and housing loans, recognition of outstanding performance, provision of buses as palliative measures, approval of promotion of eligible staff members, amongst others, urging them to continuously display unalloyed loyalty and commitment to enhance effective service delivery.

In her welcome address, the Commissioner for Education, Dr. (Mrs) Olabimpe Aderiye, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Ekiti State Teaching Service Commission, Mr Mike Omolayo said that the training programme is apt at this period going by the experiences on the field as well as the emerging roles of Principals as Accounting Officers at the school level.

The Commissioner’s representative, who doubled as the host, reiterated the avowed commitment of the Governor to use education as a veritable tool to combat poverty and social vices in the State; a commitment premised on the fact that an educated society is a prosperous society.

While expressing the readiness of the present administration to stamp out incidences of out-of-school children, which has necessitated the need to ensure that students in schools are well prepared to achieve expected educational outcomes for global relevance, Dr Aderiye commended the Governor, Mr Biodun Oyebanji for approving the appointment of 2 Tutors-General to replace the 2 that retired recently, assuring that the education family in the state would continue to work harmoniously in line with the pillars of the administration as they affect the education sector.

In their remarks, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Teachers Matters (State), Mr Fatai Oluyede and his counterpart in charge of federal teachers, Mr Sunday Anifowose urged participants to lead by example, calling for synergy between Principals and Vice-Principals so as to ensure proper institutional management.

The Governor’s aides stressed that the training was apt and necessary particularly at a period when it has become expedient to drive positive change in schools and communities at large, urging participants to display integrity through their daily actions.

In her goodwill message, the Executive Secretary Education Trust Fund, Mrs Bosede Jegede said that the impact of the present administration has reflected across schools in the State, admonishing administrators to ensure proper usage of the gadgets entrusted in their care.

Speaking on behalf of the Tutors General, the Tutor General for Ekiti Central, Mrs Adekemi Olukowade charged participants to embrace change and opportunities for growth, thereby transforming vision to reality.

In her own message to the participants, the Coordinator of Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment (AGILE) Mrs Yewande Adesua said that Ekiti is the only State in the Southern part of Nigeria that is currently benefitting from AGILE project; which has given public secondary schools in the state a face-lift, encouraging administrators to imbibe maintenance culture.

Some of the participants interviewed at the end of the day one training sessions applauded the leadership of the commission for organizing the training when it was needed most.

They appreciated the Governor, Mr Biodun Oyebanji for granting approval for the workshop, with an assurance that knowledge acquired would be applied for educational transformation in line with the shared prosperity agenda of his administration.

Some of the topics discussed by seasoned administrators, professionals and technocrats are ‘Human Resources Management and Record Keeping’, ‘Financial Resource Management in Public Secondary Schools’, ‘Leadership Skills Development for School Administrators’ and ‘Project Administration and Supervision in Schools’ among others.
