EKITI GOVT LAUNCHES MASS ANTHRAX VACCINATION EXERCISE FOR LIVESTOCK

…receives 100,000 doses of Anthrax spore vaccine

In a proactive move to protect livestock from the deadly anthrax disease, the Ekiti State Government in conjunction with Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support (L-PRES) Project has launched a mass anthrax vaccination exercise in the State.

The State Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, Hon Ebenezer Boluwade who flagged off the immunization exercise at Igede-Ekiti assured that the Administration of Governor Biodun Oyebanji was fully committed
to preventing the spread of Anthrax and other deadly diseases that could negatively affect livestock production in the State.

Boluwade represented by the Permanent Secretary of his Ministry, Mr Babatope Ojo stressed that the present administration will leverage on L-PRES project to support livestock farmers as to optimize their productivity and profitability.

He noted that State government in collaboration with L-PRES is fully committed to strengthen the livestock sector as plans are in top gear to build a modern veterinary hospital with state of the art equipment which will enhance the capacity of animal health providers to provide quality veterinary services and conduct proper diagnostic tests, which will play crucial role in accurate disease identification, improving treatment outcomes, increasing productivity, reducing economic losses and improving food safety.

In his remarks, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, Mr Babatope Ojo who spoke through the Director Veterinary Services, Dr. Emmanuel Osayomi disclosed that the State government had already received 100,000 doses of Anthrax spore vaccine from the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security through Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support (L-PRES) Project for the immunization exercise.

The Permanent Secretary assured that the State Government will fully collaborate with the L-PRES Project to improve livestock productivity and resilience and boost the Livestock industry in the State with the Project Development Objective (PDO) which include enhancing livestock disease management and control, increasing access to market and improving the livelihoods of livestock farmers.

In his contribution, the State Project Coordinator L-PRES, Mr Olayinka Adedipe said that Anthrax is a serious infectious disease that can be transmitted from animals to humans, making vaccination a crucial step in preventing its spread.

In their Goodwill Messages, a renowned livestock farmer and former Acting Governor of the State, Rt. Hon. Tope Ademiluyi commended the commitment of Oyebanji Administration towards promoting climate – resilient livestock Production systems.

Also speaking at the event, the Chairman, Yoruba/Fulani Ilorin Alfa Tayo Aliyu and his counterpart in Sheep/ goats breeders Association, Alhaji Elias Bello appreciated government for their support through strengthening institutional capacity for livestock development in the State.

The exercise is expected to cover all 16 local government areas of Ekiti State, with a focus on vaccinating cattle, sheep, and goats. The government has assured livestock farmers of its commitment to supporting the exercise, ensuring that the vaccination process is carried out efficiently and effectively.

The Ekiti State Government’s mass anthrax vaccination exercise is also expected to promote public health and sustainable agricultural practices.
