EKITI TO OBSERVE JANUARY EDITION OF ENVIRONMENTAL SANITATION EXERCISE

The Ekiti State Government has announced that the first edition of the monthly environmental sanitation exercise for 2025 will take place on Saturday, January 25, 2025, from 7:00 AM to 10:00 AM.

A statement from the Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Erelu Tosin Aluko-Ajisafe made available to newsmen in Ado-Ekiti noted that all markets and commercial centers will remain closed during the sanitation period in order to ensure full participation of residents of the State.

She said Movement restrictions will also be in place during the exercise, except for those on essential duties.

According to the Commissioner, the theme of this month’s exercise is “Environment is Your Life: Make Sanitation Your Daily Habit,” adding that the theme underscores the importance of maintaining a clean environment in promoting public health and well-being as the year begins.

She emphasized the need for collective efforts in keeping the state clean and encouraged everyone to adopt proper waste disposal habits and maintain good environmental hygiene throughout the year.

Aluko -Ajisafe also disclosed that as part of the exercise, market women are expected to clean their shops and stalls during the Thursday market sanitation, while government employees are required to tidy their offices and surroundings on Friday.

She disclosed that Environmental Health Officers from the Ministry of Environment, Local Government Areas (LGAs), Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs), NGOs, and security agencies will be on the ground to monitor the exercise and enforce necessary measures.

The Commissioner noted that defaulters will be prosecuted by mobile courts set up for this purpose.

While reiterating the government’s commitment to environmental sustainability, Aluko-Ajisafe called on residents to embrace the sanitation exercise as a collective responsibility.
