In a significant step aimed at boosting the teaching of Mathematics, Technology and Science subjects in secondary schools in Ekiti State,138 teachers of public secondary school in the State have undergone a six-month special training programme to enhance their teaching skills.
The training which was a joint initiative between the Ekiti State Government and the collaborative efforts of T.Y. Danjuma Foundation and Teacher Aid Initiative; was designed to enhance the teaching skills of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics(STEM) educators with learner-centered teaching methods to improve instructional delivery in STEM education.
The online training lasted for six months for the first cohort of 138 teachers.
In her Address at the graduation ceremony of the teachers in Ado-Ekiti, the State Commissioner for Education, Dr (Mrs) Olabimpe Aderiye expressed gratitude to State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji for his unwavering support in creating an enabling environment for teaching and learning activities to thrive in schools across the State.
She noted that apart from giant strides of Oyebanji administration in terms of infrastructural transformation across all public schools in Ekiti State, government has facilitated various capacity building programmes to ensure that the State teaching personnel are trained to ensure improved learning outcomes.
She appreciated T.Y.Danjuma Foundation in collaboration with the Teacher Aids Initiative for facilitating the training of STEM teachers in Ekiti State to compliment the Human Capital Development of Ekiti State Government.
She noted that the Ministry will assess the impacts of the training on the professional competence of the teachers and on the learning outcomes of the students.
Dr Aderiye charged the newly trained teachers to use the knowledge and skills acquired to make a positive impact on their students, stressing that the future of Ekiti and the nation at large depend on the learning outcomes of young minds in STEM fields.

The event also featured a keynote address by Dr. Abayomi Onanuga, who highlighted the strategies and methodologies of project-based learning, encouraging the teachers to adopt methods that foster critical thinking, problem-solving, and collaboration in their classrooms.
Dr Onanuga, a Senior Lecturer in Olabisi Onabanjo University said that project-based learning does not only help students to understand theoretical concepts but also empowers them to apply their knowledge in real-world scenarios, urging them to ensure they inspire their students to be problem solvers.
Speaking on behalf of the graduands, Mrs Olayinka Oladapo and Mrs Nike Bello appreciated the State governor for the opportunity to be beneciaries of the training program, adding that they will impact the knowledge garnered on their pupils.
The graduation marks a significant milestone in the States’ efforts to strengthen STEM education and prepare teachers to meet the evolving needs of students and ensuring that future generations are better equipped to meet the challenges of an increasingly tech-driven world.
