Adebayo, Ekiti State Budget Commissioner Stresses Importance of Reliable Statistics in Government Planning Activities

…blames poor public socio-economic service delivery, policy failures on absence of reliable statistics

Ekiti State Commissioner for Budget, Economic Planning and Performance Management, Mr. Niyi Adebayo has blamed poor public socio-economic service delivery and policy failures in most developing countries of the world to absence of reliable statistics that can help governments in planning.

The Commissioner stated this in his remarks at the 2nd quarter consultative committee meeting on statistics of Bureau of Statistics in Ado Ekiti.

Mr Adebayo expressed worry that poor funding, lack of skilled workforce, politicization and manipulation of data among others have also negatively impacted the quality of vital statistics across the country.

He said that all these have resulted in social challenges that have denied the country the enormous benefits of vital registration.

The Commissioner, who stated that government and citizens must be very deliberate at progressively mitigating the influence of the various factors, advocated for public education and enlightenment and partnership with cultural and religious organizations to stem the ugly trend.

Adebayo said to curb all these, the record of births, death and other elements of vital registration must be updated regularly and accurately captured.

According to him, “It is high time all critical stakeholders especially government agencies achieve marked improvements in their respective areas of responsibilities both in the way they are organized and in the quality of their work as outputs.”

Earlier, in her remarks, the Acting Ekiti State Statistician General, Mrs Dolapo Ojo commended the State Governor, Mr. Biodun Oyebanji for his support for statistics production in the state.

She said the remarkable achievements which the Oyebanji led government recorded in all sectors are traceable to the use of statistics to implement policies, programs and initiatives that are evidence based.

Ojo said the vision of the State Bureau of Statistics was to produce real time statistics in all sectors.

The Acting Statistician General said participants of the statistics committee meeting were drawn from different sectors with a view to getting accurate and timely coverage of records of vital registration, that can assist government in result driven planning.
