L-PRES INAUGURATES CONFLICT, PREVENTION AND MEDIATION COMMITTEE IN 16 LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREAS IN EKITI STATE

As part of efforts to promote peaceful co-existence between herders and farmers in Ekiti State, the Livestock Productivity & Resilience support Project (L-PRES) in the State has inaugurated a committee on conflict prevention and mediation.

In his address while inaugurating the Committee in Ado Ekiti, the State Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, Hon. Ebenezer Boluwade challenged the members of the committee to promote the ethics and dynamics of social cohesion among herders and farmers in 16 Local Government Areas to ensure food security.

The Committee which comprises representatives of Ekiti State Council of Traditional Rulers, Nigeria Police,All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN)and Cattle rearers is expected to
support measures that would help the livestock industry and other supportive agric businesses to mitigate and adapt to the impacts of climate change and increase adaptive capacity by promoting climate smart practices and technologies.

In his address at the event ,the Permanent secretary, Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, Engr. Olugbenga Odesanmi said that L-PRES Project will also support farmers and livestock producers and value chain operators to improve their performance and ensure food security in the State.

Earlier, the State Project Coordinator L-PRES, Mr Olayinka Adedipe who was represented by the Animal Husbandry Officer, Mr. Muyiwa Adelodun highlighted the activities of sub-components 3 of L-PRES Project which comprises of establishment of Conflict, prevention and mediation committee, capacity building for farmers and Community leaders on conflict resolution, identification and establishment of operational mediation platform for conflict prevention and management and Grievance Redress Mechanisms (GRM).

In their goodwill messages, the representative of State Traditional Council, the Arinjale of Ise- Ekiti, Oba Adetunji Ajayi, Former Speaker and Acting Governor of Ekiti State, Rt Hon. Tope Ademiluyi and Mr. Falana Ojo, representative of All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN) appreciated the Federal and Ekiti State governments for setting up conflict, prevention and management and establishment of operational mediation platforms in the 16 Local Government Areas, a supportive measure initiative to help crop farmers and agribusiness mitigating adaptive measure to climate change and resilience through extension and advisory services to ensure Food Security, and peaceful co-existence in their domain using government relevant laws to ensure Food Security.

In his response, the Ekiti State Chairman of the Miyetti Allah, Alhaji Mahammadu Nasamu who promised to take steps to ensure peaceful coexistence between herders and farmers in the State urged governments intervention on migration of herders and register with community leaders.

He said that he would work with community leaders in 16 Local Government to ensure peaceful co-existence among farmers and herders and also fish out criminal herders among them.
