
Ekiti State Universal Basic Education Board(SUBEB ) has pledged to provide the needed support for the forthcoming immunization exercise against cervical cancer amongst the girl -child between 9 and 14 years in public primary schools in the State
The Permanent Secretary, Ekiti State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Mr. Afolabi Adebiyi who made the promise on Wednesday during the visit of the State PHCDA Team to the SUBEB Headquarters in Ado Ekiti said the Board was fully committed to the wellbeing of the pupils and children in the State.
Mr. Adebiyi who said studies had shown that the disease may not manifest until a woman reaches the age of 50yrs and above, thereby making it difficult to control, stated that it was imperative that it is nipped in the bud, hence, the need for the immunization exercise.
While stressing the need for proper awareness of the immunization exercise, he told the team to ensure that parents were well informed and sensitized on the importance of the exercise ahead of the proposed date to guarantee its success.
The Permanent Secretary said it is also pertinent to liaise with other Stakeholders in the basic education sector including the Association of Primary School Head Teachers of Nigeria (AOPSHON) and the Parents Teachers Association (PTA) to ensure a smooth and hitch free exercise.

Earlier in his remarks, the Director, Disease Control and Immunization at the State Primary Health Care Development Agency, Dr. Nicholas Ojo said the aim of the immunization exercise is to prevent cancer of the womb from an early age among the female pupils in the State.
Dr. Ojo lauded the Board and management of SUBEB for the proactive measure it has taken to support the drive to prevent this disease in Ekiti State.
While stating that the proposed 5-day exercise is expected to start on Monday, 27th May, 2024, affirmed that the vaccine would be administered intramuscularly (through the skin, into the muscle).
Present at the occasion were the State Health Educator, Mrs Olajumoke Ologuntoye, State WHO Technical Officer, Dr. Bamidele Olayinka, the UNICEF Consultant, Mr. Kannah Ibrahim, and representative of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDB), Pharm. Isiaka Adebisi who applauded the State Government government for its efforts at ensuring that sound healthcare facilities are available to children in the State.
